# Reducto

Reducto converts documents (PDFs, images, spreadsheets, DOCX, and 30+ other formats) into structured data.

- **[Parse](#parse)** — Convert documents into structured text, tables, and figures with layout-aware chunking
- **[Extract](#extract)** — Pull specific fields into JSON using a JSON Schema
- **[Split](#split)** — Divide documents into named sections using natural language descriptions
- **[Classify](#classify)** — Categorize documents by type before processing
- **[Edit](#edit)** — Fill PDF forms and modify DOCX files with natural language instructions
- **[CLI](#cli)** — Parse, extract, and edit local files from a terminal
- **[MCP Server](#mcp-server)** — Give agents Reducto tools directly in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and other MCP clients

**Key facts:**

- **Base URL:** `https://platform.reducto.ai`
- **Auth:** `Authorization: Bearer $REDUCTO_API_KEY`
- **SDKs:** Python (`pip install reductoai`), Node.js (`npm install reductoai`), Go (`go get github.com/reductoai/reducto-go-sdk`)
- **Read https://docs.reducto.ai/agent-guide.md before writing integration code** — full parameter tables and response shapes for every endpoint.

## Quick Setup

**Step 1 — Get an API key:**

Check for an existing working key first; invalid keys and existing accounts go to Studio for recovery. For a new user at a new company, follow the [HTTP signup runbook](https://reducto.ai/auth.md):

- POST https://accounts.reducto.ai/api/agent/accounts with JSON {"email":"ada@example.com"}. Save signup_token privately; the response contains expires_at, resend_after (60 seconds), terms_url, and privacy_url.
- Gather the emailed six-digit code, first and last name, explicit terms agreement, and first document. If the assistant can read the human's inbox (a connected mail tool, an accessible mailbox, etc.), fetch the Reducto code itself instead of asking the human to check email. If the first and last name are already known from memory, the environment, or prior conversation, use them without asking. Only ask the human for the pieces that remain unavailable.
- Terms agreement is the one step that always requires an explicit answer from the human: ask them to confirm they agree to the [terms](https://reducto.ai/terms) and acknowledge the [privacy policy](https://reducto.ai/privacy), and explain that this authorizes the assistant to create the account and receive an API key. Never infer consent from the code being available, from prior sessions, or from silence.
- POST https://accounts.reducto.ai/api/agent/accounts/verify with JSON {"signup_token":"<saved token>","code":"012345","first_name":"Ada","last_name":"Lovelace","terms_accepted":true}.
- On HTTP 202 {"status":"provisioning","retry_after":5}, wait and repeat the identical verification request. Retry network failures/503 with the same payload. Honor Retry-After on 429. Do not restart signup during provisioning.
- HTTP 200 returns api_key, api_key_id, org_id, credits_granted (15000), expires_at (one year), and studio_url. Privately save api_key as REDUCTO_API_KEY; never print the response or paste the key into chat. Repeat delivery is available to the original request for 10 minutes, then use Studio.
- After successful signup, tell the human: no password was set; the signup code only verified their email. They can sign into Studio using a magic link via “Email me a sign-in link”. Setting a password is optional via “Set a password” on the login screen.
- Show error.message and error.field (when present) in the agent's terminal. For 400 invalid_input, ask for the corrected fields and retry; if error.restart_required is true, request a new code after correcting the fields and respecting the resend cooldown. Otherwise, preserve any already accepted verification request. For 403 signup_restricted, show the email-policy reason and ask for an eligible work email. Only 409 studio_required requires Studio.
- HTTP 409 studio_required (existing user/company, SSO, or manual continuation) means stop automated signup and show error.message with studio_url. The human continues in Studio to sign in or select Join or Request access for a listed organization. HTTP 400 invalid_code means ask the human; 410 verification_expired means request a new code after the cooldown. Full error shapes and retries: [auth.md](https://reducto.ai/auth.md).

No CLI install is needed for signup. Codes expire after 10 minutes with five incorrect attempts; resends invalidate the previous token/code. Signup limits: five sends/email/hour, ten/IP/hour. Existing users can create keys in [Studio](https://studio.reducto.ai) → **API Keys**.

```bash
# macOS / Linux
export REDUCTO_API_KEY="your_api_key_here"
# Windows (PowerShell)
$env:REDUCTO_API_KEY="your_api_key_here"
```

The SDKs read `REDUCTO_API_KEY` from the **process environment** — they do not load `.env` files automatically. If the project keeps secrets in `.env`, load it explicitly (Python: `python-dotenv`; Node: `node --env-file=.env` or the `dotenv` package). Never hardcode the key in source files.

**Step 2 — Verify credentials:**

```bash
curl -s "https://platform.reducto.ai/jobs?limit=1" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $REDUCTO_API_KEY"
```

A valid key returns `{"jobs": [...], "next_cursor": ...}` (the list is empty on new accounts — that's still success). On failure, the error message names the problem: `401 "Provide an access token"` means `REDUCTO_API_KEY` is empty in this shell — export it and retry. `401 "Invalid access token"` means the key is wrong — direct the user to [studio.reducto.ai](https://studio.reducto.ai) → **API Keys** to copy a valid key. A `403` with an HTML error page means the request was sent with no `Authorization` header at all.

Do not proceed until this call returns successfully.

**Step 3 — Install the right tool for the task** (see the table below), then run a first parse to confirm the pipeline end to end.

## Choosing the Right Tool

| Task | Tool | Why |
|------|------|-----|
| Integrate document processing into an application | Python/Node/Go SDK | Typed clients, async support, retries |
| One-off REST calls or unsupported languages | `curl` against `platform.reducto.ai` | No dependencies |
| Parse/extract/edit local files from a terminal | `reducto` CLI | Batch folders, writes `.parse.md` / `.extract.json` outputs |
| Let an agent process documents in its reasoning loop | MCP server | Tools for parse/extract/split/classify/edit, no glue code |
| Visual pipeline building, inspecting results | [Reducto Studio](https://studio.reducto.ai) | Bounding-box citation viewer, no code |

## Which Endpoint Should I Use?

| I want to... | Endpoint | Key config |
|---|---|---|
| Get all text, tables, and figures as structured chunks | `POST /parse` | `enhance.agentic` for AI error correction on hard documents |
| Extract specific fields into JSON with a schema | `POST /extract` | `instructions.schema` (JSON Schema) |
| Divide a document into named sections by page range | `POST /split` | `split_description` (section definitions) |
| Classify a document's type | `POST /classify` | `classification_schema` (categories + criteria) |
| Fill PDF or DOCX forms | `POST /edit` | `edit_instructions` (natural language) |
| Upload a local file | `POST /upload` (multipart) | Returns a `file_id` to pass as `input` |
| Process asynchronously with webhooks | `/parse_async`, `/extract_async`, `/split_async`, `/edit_async` | `webhook` URL |
| Check job status / retrieve results | `GET /job/{job_id}` | — |

Inputs accept a `file_id` (`reducto://...` from `/upload`), a public or presigned URL, or `jobid://...` to reuse a previous job's parse without reprocessing. Full parameter tables for every endpoint: https://docs.reducto.ai/agent-guide.md

## SDK Quickstarts

Match the project's existing conventions (package manager, env handling, error handling) when integrating.

### Python

```bash
pip install reductoai
```

```python
from pathlib import Path
from reducto import Reducto
client = Reducto()  # reads REDUCTO_API_KEY from env
upload = client.upload(file=Path("document.pdf"))
result = client.parse.run(
    input=upload.file_id,
    settings={"model": "r-1"},
)
print(result.studio_link)  # for reading the content, see "Parse → Handling the response"
```

### Node.js / TypeScript

```bash
npm install reductoai
```

```typescript
import Reducto from "reductoai";
import fs from "fs";
const client = new Reducto(); // reads REDUCTO_API_KEY from env
const upload = await client.upload({ file: fs.createReadStream("document.pdf") });
const result = await client.parse.run({
  input: upload.file_id,
  settings: { model: "r-1" },
});
console.log(result.studio_link); // for reading the content, see "Parse → Handling the response"
```

### Go

```bash
go get github.com/reductoai/reducto-go-sdk
```

```go
client := reducto.NewClient(option.WithAPIKey(os.Getenv("REDUCTO_API_KEY")))
```

Go uses PascalCase properties and wraps values with `reducto.F()`; Python and Node use snake_case. See https://docs.reducto.ai/agent-guide.md for full per-language conventions.

## Parse

Convert a document into structured JSON chunks with text, tables, figures, and bounding boxes.

```python
result = client.parse.run(
    input=upload.file_id,  # or a public URL
    settings={"model": "r-1"},
    retrieval={"chunking": {"chunk_mode": "variable"}},  # best for RAG
)
```

### Handling the response (critical)

Large documents return a **URL** instead of inline chunks. Always check `result.type`:

```python
import httpx  # already installed — it's a dependency of the reductoai SDK
if result.result.type == "url":
    chunks = httpx.get(result.result.url).json()      # plain dicts
else:
    chunks = result.result.chunks                      # SDK objects
for chunk in chunks:
    content = chunk["content"] if isinstance(chunk, dict) else chunk.content
```

Useful parse options (all optional):

- `settings.model: "r-1"` — selects the current Parse model. The API default remains legacy, so set this explicitly for new integrations.
- `enhance.agentic: [{"scope": "text"}]` — AI correction passes for `"text"` (scanned docs), `"table"` (misaligned columns), `"figure"` (chart data). Higher accuracy, higher latency and cost — start without it, enable where baseline quality falls short.
- `retrieval.chunking.chunk_mode` — `"disabled"` (default, one chunk), `"variable"` (semantic, best for RAG), `"section"`, `"page"`, `"block"`, `"page_sections"`.
- `formatting.table_output_format` — `"dynamic"` (default), `"html"`, `"md"`, `"json"`, `"csv"`.
- `settings.page_range` — `{"start": 1, "end": 10}` (1-indexed) to process specific pages.
- `settings.return_images` — `["figure", "table", "page"]` to get image URLs per block type.

## Extract

Pull fields into JSON using a JSON Schema. Field names and descriptions directly influence accuracy — write them as if briefing a person.

```python
result = client.extract.run(
    input=upload.file_id,  # or f"jobid://{parse_job_id}" to reuse a parse
    instructions={
        "schema": {
            "type": "object",
            "properties": {
                "invoice_number": {"type": "string", "description": "The invoice number"},
                "total": {"type": "number", "description": "Total amount due"},
            },
        }
    },
)
data = result.result[0]  # result is a LIST — one item per document
```

Rules that prevent common failures:

- The top-level schema must be `{"type": "object", ...}`.
- `result` is a **list**; index `[0]` for single-document extraction.
- Set `settings.array_extract: true` when extracting arrays from long documents (schema needs a top-level array property).
- `settings.citations.enabled: true` returns source page, bbox, and text per value — mutually exclusive with chunking.
- `settings.deep_extract: true` runs an agentic refinement loop for near-perfect accuracy on hard documents (higher cost/latency).
- Extract runs Parse internally: if a value doesn't appear in Parse output, Extract cannot find it.

## Split

Divide a document into named sections by page number using natural language descriptions.

```python
result = client.split.run(
    input=upload.file_id,
    split_description=[
        {"name": "Summary", "description": "Executive summary section"},
        {"name": "Financials", "description": "Financial statements and tables"},
    ],
)
for split in result.result.splits:
    print(split.name, split.pages)
```

## Classify

Categorize a document before routing it. Defaults to the first 5 pages of context.

```python
result = client.classify.run(
    input=upload.file_id,
    classification_schema=[
        {"category": "invoice", "criteria": ["billing info", "itemized charges"]},
        {"category": "contract", "criteria": ["legal terms", "signatures"]},
    ],
)
print(result.result)  # {"category": "invoice"}
```

## Edit

Fill PDF forms and modify DOCX files with natural language.

**Note:** Edit uses `document_url` as its input parameter, not `input` like every other endpoint.

```python
result = client.edit.run(
    document_url=upload.file_id,
    edit_instructions="Fill Name: John Doe, Date: 2024-01-15, Check 'Yes' for US Citizen",
)
print(result.document_url)  # presigned download URL, valid 24 hours
```

The first edit of a new form returns a `form_schema`. Cache it and pass it back on repeat edits of the same template to skip field detection.

## Chaining with `jobid://`

Every processing call returns a `job_id`. Pass `jobid://<job_id>` as the input to a follow-up call to reuse the parse — no re-upload, no re-parse, no extra parse credits:

```text
upload(file)                          → reducto://abc
parse.run(input="reducto://abc")      → job_id xyz123
extract.run(input="jobid://xyz123")   → reuses parsed text
split.run(input="jobid://xyz123")     → reuses parsed text
```

## Async Processing

Every endpoint except Classify has an async variant that returns a `job_id` immediately:

```python
job = client.parse.run_job(
    input=upload.file_id,
    settings={"model": "r-1"},
)  # /parse_async
import time
while True:
    result = client.job.get(job.job_id)
    if result.status in ("Completed", "Failed"):
        break
    time.sleep(2)
```

Pass a `webhook` URL for push delivery instead of polling. See https://docs.reducto.ai/workflows/async-overview.md

## CLI

Parse, extract, and edit local files or whole folders from a terminal.

```bash
pip install reducto-cli   # requires Python 3.11+
```

On older Pythons, install via uv instead (uv provides its own Python):

```bash
curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh   # install uv if missing
uv tool install reducto-cli
```

The CLI reads `REDUCTO_API_KEY` from the environment when set — only run `reducto login` when it isn't (opens a browser device-code flow; credentials saved to `~/.reducto/config.yaml`). Headless/agent environments should prefer the env var.

```bash
reducto parse document.pdf                 # writes document.pdf.parse.md
reducto parse ./docs                       # recursive over a folder
reducto parse document.pdf --agentic       # maximum accuracy, slower
reducto extract invoice.pdf -s schema.json # writes invoice.pdf.extract.json
reducto edit form.pdf -i "Fill Name: John Doe, Date: 2024-01-15"  # writes form.edited.pdf
```

The CLI reuses existing `.parse.md` outputs for extraction via `jobid://` automatically. CLI commands: `login`, `parse`, `extract`, `edit`. For split and classify, use the SDK, REST API, or MCP server.

## MCP Server

Gives MCP clients (Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf) direct Reducto tools: `parse_document`, `extract_data`, `split_document`, `classify_document`, `edit_document`, `upload_file`, `get_job`, `list_jobs`, `get_documentation`.

**Hosted (no install; public URLs only):**

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "reducto": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.reducto.ai/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer your-api-key" }
    }
  }
}
```

**Local (supports local file paths; requires Python 3.11+ and `uvx`):**

```bash
curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh   # install uv if missing
uvx mcp-server-reducto --login                     # or reuse existing `reducto login` credentials
```

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "reducto": { "command": "uvx", "args": ["mcp-server-reducto"] }
  }
}
```

The local server also reads `REDUCTO_API_KEY` from the environment — `--login` is only needed when neither the env var nor saved credentials exist.

For Claude Code: `claude mcp add -s user reducto -- uvx mcp-server-reducto`. Per-client config paths and full tool reference: https://docs.reducto.ai/mcp-server.md

## Verify

After setup, confirm the integration works end to end:

1. **Credentials:** `curl -s "https://platform.reducto.ai/jobs?limit=1" -H "Authorization: Bearer $REDUCTO_API_KEY"` returns `200` with a `jobs` array.
2. **First parse:** run a parse on a real document (any small PDF the user has, or a public URL). Confirm the response contains `job_id`, `result`, and `usage`.
3. **Inspect:** every response includes a `studio_link` — share it with the user so they can inspect the output against the source document at the bounding-box level.
4. **Re-check `/jobs`:** the new job now appears in the list.

If something fails, diagnose and fix. Common issues are in Troubleshooting below.

## Troubleshooting

- **401 "Provide an access token"** — `REDUCTO_API_KEY` is empty in the current shell; export it and retry.
- **401 "Invalid access token"** — the key is wrong; copy a valid key from Studio and re-export.
- **403 Forbidden with an HTML page** — the request was sent with no `Authorization` header at all. To check API availability, use https://status.reducto.ai; supported health and usage checks: https://docs.reducto.ai/reference/checking-api-health.md
- **422 Validation error** — invalid parameters; most often a non-object top-level extract schema, or an Edit call using `input` instead of `document_url`.
- **429 Rate limited** — too many concurrent requests. Retry with exponential backoff. Limits: https://docs.reducto.ai/reference/rate-limits.md
- **Empty or missing chunks on large documents** — `result.type` is `"url"`; fetch `result.url` for the content instead of reading `result.chunks`.
- **Array fields truncated in Extract** — set `settings.array_extract: true` and model the array at the top level of the schema.
- **`reducto` command not found** — install it with `pip install reducto-cli` (needs Python 3.11+) or `uv tool install reducto-cli` (install uv first via the one-liner in the CLI section), then re-open the shell or check PATH.
- **MCP tools not appearing** — restart the MCP client; confirm `uvx mcp-server-reducto` starts cleanly in a terminal.
- **Encrypted PDF** — pass `settings.document_password`.
- **Poor quality on scans, handwriting, or complex tables** — add `enhance.agentic` scopes (SDK/REST) or `--agentic` (CLI).
- **Results expire** — outputs are deleted after 24 hours by default; set `settings.persist_results: true` to keep them, and download Edit outputs promptly.
